Questions we’re often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Sudbury?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Sudbury?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
How are fitted cupboards priced?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
About our fitted cupboards in Sudbury
Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage for towels and bedding and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Sudbury, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Is bespoke worth it?
Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. Fitted storage is built in for good and is designed for this home. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

How we price fitted cupboards
There is no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How big the furniture is
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
What to send when you contact us
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Where you live, with the postcode
- The type of home and how the room is reached
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Boards, parts and paint
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors on a meter or fuse board cupboard need to open easily, so engineers can reach what’s inside.
Spray-painted finish
For a smooth, even look, spray painting is a good choice, and it is done before the cupboards reach your home.
How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- First, you let us know about the room and what it needs.
- We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
- A quote in writing is sent to you.
- Everything is made at our workshop.
- The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Making use of awkward spaces in Sudbury
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 53% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Sudbury, with about 12% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Sudbury include Sudbury Town Underground Station (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St Andrew (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Brent is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Sudbury fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.
If you live in a flat close to Sudbury & Harrow Road station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Andrew, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. Close to Preston Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.
