City of Westminster Fitted Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in City of Westminster, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes

Fitted wardrobes for homes in City of Westminster

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and dusty space on top of the wardrobe.

Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around City of Westminster are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

How we price fitted wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The width and height of the space
  • The internal fittings

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in City of Westminster

For some, it is about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

Close to Hyde Park? Fitted wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so tell us at the design visit if you need to store something heavy.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in City of Westminster

I live in a flat in City of Westminster. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My home in City of Westminster is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

City of Westminster homes and fitted wardrobes

In the streets around City of Westminster, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 20 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central City of Westminster. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 75% of households in the neighbourhood around City of Westminster live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a flat near Bond Street station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Handel Hendrix House, about 0.3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
