Fitted wardrobes in Marylebone
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about mismatched bedroom furniture and a room too narrow for hinged doors.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Marylebone built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What happens on fitting day
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Arranging a design visit
It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Why bespoke in Marylebone?
Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. Our wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors, ready to assemble in the room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Bond Street station?
Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Marylebone?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.
What happens during the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Marylebone homes and fitted wardrobes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the streets around Marylebone, with about 15% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Marylebone, Historic England’s list includes Chandos House (Grade I), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St Peters (Grade I), less than half a mile south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 75% of households in the streets around Marylebone live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
For families living near St Vincent's Catholic Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a period home close to Russian chapel on Welbeck Street, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Our area takes in the homes around Royal Society of Medicine Library, The St Marylebone CofE School and The St Marylebone CofE School. Not far away are St. James's Park Lake.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with its own mix of hanging, shelves and drawers.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
- A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
The wider area includes historic houses such as Handel Hendrix House, about 0.3 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Before you choose who makes it
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Honest limits
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Decorating or plastering the room
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
