Fitted wardrobes in North End: what you get
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. If your home has wardrobes that are full to bursting and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around North End date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions we’re often asked
I live in a flat in North End. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Is North End in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes, North End is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.
How do I get started?
Just drop us a line using the contact form. It’s useful to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a written quote.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What happens on fitting day
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.
Before fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Arranging a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Fitted wardrobes in North End: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the streets around North End, with about 11% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of North End is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 28% of households in the area around North End, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses like Garden Lodge, about 0.4 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in North End
An tricky room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
Close to Gwendwr Garden? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Tips worth knowing
A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
