Wall beds for homes in Nunhead
The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a spare room that’s rarely slept in and a hobby room with a bed for guests.
In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, which matters around Nunhead, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Is bespoke worth it?
If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. How long you’ll be in the home is worth weighing up before choosing built-in. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Your questions about wall beds in Nunhead
Do you cover homes near Nunhead station?
Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Nunhead?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Can a wall bed have storage around it?
Yes, that is a common request. A desk beside the bed suits a room that’s an office by day, while new sockets are for your electrician.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Nunhead
In the streets around Nunhead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List records 19 entries within half a mile of the centre of Nunhead. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the neighbourhood around Nunhead, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If you live near Peckham Rye, wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a family home near Ivydale Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

What affects the cost of wall beds
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Helping us understand the room
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
How fitting day works
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
