How it’s made

Doors and drawer fronts

Hinged doors suit rooms with space in front. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space, though only part of the inside is open at once.

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood, so they hold their shape.

How we make fitted wardrobes for Westminster

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. People typically come to us about bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

With a large share of homes around Westminster built before 1919, plenty of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Westminster?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Westminster?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, since there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time first. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hinged or sliding doors

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, use our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Storage built into the slope uses space that would otherwise go to waste, keeping the room clear.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Bedroom storage in Westminster

About 47% of the homes in the area around Westminster went up before 1919, and about 25% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Westminster is in the Broadway and Christchurch Gardens Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, especially for larger pieces.

If your children go to Harris Westminster Sixth Form or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Clarence House, about 0.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Westminster is within the City of Westminster, about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster. Whether your home in Westminster is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We cover places right across the rest of London.

Postcode districts we cover here for fitted wardrobes: SW1P, W1J and SW1V. Our area takes in homes on streets like Eaton Lane, Wilton Road and Castle Lane, whether you want fitted wardrobes or another piece made for the room.
