Fitted wardrobes for homes in Millbank
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. If your home has empty alcoves in the bedroom and too little room for clothes, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Older bedrooms typically have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Millbank date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
- A written quote follows.
- Once you are happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Honest limits
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Flats, leases and landlords
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Does a conservation area in or near Millbank affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My home in Millbank is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Which boards do you build with?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe.
Do you cover Millbank?
Yes, we do. We work in Millbank and across Westminster, and the process is the same everywhere we go.
How it’s made
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour.
Birch plywood
Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat across wider sections.
Do you need fitted wardrobes in Millbank?
After a loft conversion, the new bedroom usually needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
For families living near Harris Westminster Sixth Form, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Millbank
Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the area around Millbank, with about 25% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 412 entries within half a mile of the centre of Millbank. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Millbank (about 25%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.
If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near St James's Park, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
