Hackney Fitted Wardrobes

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom, for homes in Hackney. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home.

  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go

Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

About our fitted wardrobes in Hackney

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a room too narrow for hinged doors and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.

Around Hackney, most households live in purpose-built flats, and blocks often have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. Checking with the building’s managing agent early keeps the day running smoothly. If your flat is leasehold, your lease may also need checking before fitted wardrobes are fixed to the walls.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line the doors up again.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van typically needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Hackney

Is Hackney in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, Hackney is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Hackney?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard wardrobes can’t follow a slope. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope, with hanging where it is tall and drawers or shelves where it’s low. Ready-made units cannot follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Fitted furniture is built around them.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hackney

Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Hackney, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Hackney, 15 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, the rest of London included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Hackney. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St John of Jerusalem, less than half a mile south of the centre of Hackney, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Clapton Park, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For an older house near Church of St Luke, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Hackney is about 2 miles south-west of Shoreditch, within the London Borough of Hackney. We cover Hackney as part of our work across the rest of London. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, large and small.

Here we cover the E9, E8, E3 and E5 postcode area for fitted wardrobes. You will find streets here like Homerton High Street, Primrose Square and St John's Church Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. The A107 and B113 run close to Hackney; on busy main roads, unloading fitted wardrobes takes a little planning. If you are just outside Hackney, we also cover Homerton (1 mile north), Lower Clapton (1 mile north), Hackney Central (1 mile west), London Fields (1 mile south-west) and Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-west). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places such as Shoreditch (2 miles south-west), Hoxton (2 miles south-west), West Hackney (2 miles north-west), Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Stamford Hill (2 miles north-west) and Upper Clapton (2 miles north).

Landmarks near Hackney

Our area takes in the homes around The Urswick School, Cardinal Pole Catholic School and Chesham Arms and the streets around them. There is a railway station in Hackney itself: Homerton station. A little further out are Homerton University Hospital (less than half a mile north) and Cell Project Space (0.9 miles south-west). Green spaces nearby include Old Ford Island.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
