Bespoke kitchens in Tyburn

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the worktop you choose can sit level. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls and a layout for a small or awkward room.

In a period terrace, the front door, hall and any turn into the kitchen limit the size of each piece. A large share of the homes around Tyburn date from before 1919, so we measure the route to the kitchen not just the room. Long runs arrive in sections and are joined in place, with the joins placed where they won’t show.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Tyburn

Does a conservation area in or near Tyburn affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

My home in Tyburn is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What are the kitchen cabinets made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in colours agreed with you.

What does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Building work, like removing walls
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • New sockets or circuits

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. In return, the storage, layout and finish are designed for you. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the cabinets, materials and finish. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe engineer.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.
