Fitted Home Offices in Southgate

In Southgate, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. Your home office is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Work things on show in the evening
  • An awkward space with no furniture that fits
  • A guest room that’s needed for work

Southgate homes and fitted home offices

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Southgate were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and before 1919 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 28 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Southgate. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and home offices can be designed to work around them. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Southgate fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Essex House and Arnoside House, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Southgate, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your children go to Ashmole Primary School or a school nearby, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

Fitted home offices in Southgate: what you get

Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, shaped by the way you work. For a home in Southgate, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are no proper place to work from home and a corner too odd for a standard desk.

A good part of the housing around Southgate is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic home office, and its raised bulkhead can be built over or around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Southgate?

Yes, we work across Barnet, Southgate included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

I live near New Southgate station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

We do not do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. It’s useful to agree the positions at the measuring visit.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Standard shelving can sag under the weight of books and files. How far a shelf spans and what it carries make a difference. We size the shelves for what they’ll carry, using birch plywood where strength is needed. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Why choose us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Work across the whole of London

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

The problems fitted home offices solve

Clutter on the desk is a common reason to get in touch. Purpose-made storage gives files, books and stationery a home. The desk stays clear for work.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Working at the kitchen table
  • Wires with no tidy route
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day

Close to Grovelands Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a home office.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. Your office furniture is made in our workshop, sized for the room.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
