  • Working at the kitchen table
  • An awkward space with no furniture that fits

Why bespoke in West Hampstead?

A fitted office can combine a desk, shelving and cupboards in one design. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why us?

  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Saturday work by prior arrangement

Fitted home offices in West Hampstead: what you get

Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. We measure and plan for the space you have in West Hampstead. Typical reasons to get in touch are no proper place to work from home and an awkward space with no furniture that fits; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Floors in older houses often slope, but a desk top needs to sit level, and in a house from before 1919 that means levelling and scribing at the base. A large share of the homes around West Hampstead were built before 1919, so it is something we plan for from the start. Shelves above are scribed to the wall so the gaps stay even.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Consider your chair when planning the desk
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Estimate the shelf space you’ll need
  • Think about where the sockets are now

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. Should you have a question about the office, drop us a line using the contact form and we will help.

Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Wires pulled across an edge can wear it. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it is in.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Home working in West Hampstead: local notes

In the area around West Hampstead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of West Hampstead is in the Redington Frognall Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in West Hampstead is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For an older house near Presbyterian Church Of St Andrew, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. For a flat near Finchley Road & Frognal station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Near listed buildings like Church of St John, less than half a mile east of the centre of West Hampstead, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Hampstead?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

My home in West Hampstead is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Home offices are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What materials do you use for home offices?

Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Can you build a home office in an alcove?

In many homes, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It is scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we will measure and tell you what fits.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Is it possible to have an office and a guest bed in one room?

Often, yes. The desk, shelving and storage can be designed to leave room for a bed, or with doors that hide the desk away. A fold-down wall bed can also be built into the design.
