St Giles Fitted Home Offices

We make fitted home offices in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood for homes in St Giles. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.

  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Shelves

Office shelving often carries heavy loads. Span, depth and load all matter. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.

How we make fitted home offices for St Giles

Everything in a home office starts with the desk. It’s made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. The design visit in St Giles is where these choices are made. If you are living with working at the kitchen table and an alcove or landing that could take a desk, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

With a large share of homes around St Giles built before 1919, the spare room in a period house is often small, with a sash window and a chimney breast. A built-in desk, shelving and closed storage can fit even a modest room. Cable routes are planned so they run neatly to the sockets, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the home office we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Fitted home offices in St Giles: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around St Giles were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of St Giles, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Giles in the Fields (Grade I), less than half a mile north-west, and House of St Barnabas (Grade I), under half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than a third of the homes in the area around St Giles (about 49%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses of that age often have alcoves beside a chimney breast that can take a desk, with shelving above.

If you live in a period home close to Soho Baptist Chapel, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Close to St Anne's Churchyard? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Note what sits on and around your desk
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Note the position of sockets in the room
  • Note how many files and books you need to store

If you are having new sockets fitted, your electrician can do that around the furniture as planned. It helps if they know where the cable routes are. Tidy cables keep the office looking calm.

Use the cable routes so wires do not rub the paint. Wires pulled across an edge can wear it. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.

Is bespoke worth it?

If you only need a simple desk against a straight wall, an off-the-shelf desk may be enough. Bespoke work makes sense in an alcove, under a slope, or where you want the desk, shelves and storage to work together. At the design visit, we’ll tell you honestly which approach suits your room. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Your questions about fitted home offices in St Giles

Is parking a problem for fitting in St Giles?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is St Giles in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, St Giles is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Pricing fitted home offices in St Giles

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is
  • How many doors and drawers there are

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and tell us how you work and where you’d like the office.
  2. At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. Your office furniture is built in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
