Hurlingham Fitted Home Offices

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted home offices in Hurlingham starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • Work things on show in the evening

Your questions about fitted home offices in Hurlingham

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hurlingham?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Hurlingham affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

About our fitted home offices in Hurlingham

A good home office has a place for everything. Drawers for stationery, cupboards for files and a printer, and shelves for books and folders, so the desk stays clear. Doors can hide the working things when you’re done. For a home in Hurlingham, we design it all around what you need to store. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a guest room that’s needed for work and paperwork and files with nowhere to go.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Hurlingham, the spare room in a period house is often small, with a sash window and a chimney breast. A built-in desk, shelving and closed storage can fit even a modest room. We plan where cables run, leaving any new wiring to your electrician.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Home working in Hurlingham: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Hurlingham were built before 1919 (about 55%) and since 2000 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Hurlingham, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 46% of households in the streets around Hurlingham live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Near listed buildings like Hurlingham House, less than half a mile south of the centre of Hurlingham, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to Sulivan Primary School or a school nearby, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Is it time for fitted home offices?

People also want an office that looks good on video calls. Built-in shelves and doors give a tidy backdrop. It’s a small detail that many people appreciate.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A desk in the wrong light
  • Wires with no tidy route
  • A guest room that’s needed for work
  • Files and folders piling up

For a flat near Imperial Wharf station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for desk tops, carcasses and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the office be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It is easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room and the home it is in.
  2. At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways. It is useful to let us know about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The desk and shelving are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
