TV and media units for homes in Somers Town
About 32% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Somers Town went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 182 entries within half a mile of the centre of Somers Town. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 77% of households in the streets around Somers Town, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Living in a block of flats near London Euston station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Handel Hendrix House, about 1.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
Somers Town is about 1 mile south-east of St Pancras, part of the London Borough of Camden. We can visit homes in Somers Town on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. We cover places right across Camden.

Green spaces nearby include Primrose Hill and Barnsbury Wood.
How we make TV and media units for Somers Town
Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you are planning a TV unit in Somers Town, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. Typical reasons to get in touch are a tangle of wires behind the TV and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Somers Town, from mansion blocks to modern developments. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. TV and media units are designed for whichever you have.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

FAQs: TV and media units in Somers Town
Do you cover homes near London Euston station?
Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Is there room for a soundbar?
Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen. Bring the sizes to the design visit.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
The furniture is built in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it is good for shelves that carry equipment and speakers.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the unit is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.
Flats, leases and landlords
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
Why bespoke in Somers Town?
Bought media units are made in set widths, and rarely fill an alcove or a wall. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling with shelves and cupboards around the screen. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Built-in pieces use the full height and the tricky corners.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

How fitting works for TV and media units
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat does not fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
- A quote in writing follows for the unit.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
- We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.
Before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Keep pets in another room while we work

Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
