Window seats in Somers Town

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. For children’s rooms, drawers are often easier for small hands than a heavy lid. Whatever the room, the process for a home in Somers Town is the same. If your home has toys spread across a bedroom floor and wanting a quiet place to read, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Somers Town, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Window seats are made in sections that fit the stairs, lift and doors, then assembled in place. Boilers and fuse boards in a hall cupboard keep the access and ventilation they need.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

The problems window seats solve

Some people want a reading spot. A seat by the window, with books nearby, makes a natural reading corner. It quickly becomes a favourite place to sit.

Here’s what window seats can help with:

  • No space for toys and games
  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room

If your children go to St Mary and St Pancras Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

What to check before you book

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Somers Town?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make window seats for homes in Somers Town?

Yes. Somers Town is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What is a window seat made from?

Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

How fitting works for window seats

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

How to get a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, use our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Somers Town homes and window seats

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Somers Town were built before 1919 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Where other trades come in

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
  • Electrical work around the seat
  • Fabric covers and cushions

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Radiator grilles
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

How it’s made

Pull-out drawers

Drawers let you see everything at once. Children can typically manage drawers more easily than a heavy lid. The drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well.

Lift-up lids

Lids can be made in one piece or in sections. Smaller lids are easier to open. We’ll go through the options at the design visit.
