Fitted home offices for your home in Bloomsbury

How we make fitted home offices for Bloomsbury

Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. If you need new sockets, they’re for your electrician, and we plan the furniture around them. We look at the sockets when we visit in Bloomsbury. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a screen that’s hard to read by the window and wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day.

A desk can be built into a run of wardrobes or bedroom cupboards, with drawers beneath and shelving over it. Since most households around Bloomsbury live in purpose-built flats, one run of furniture doing two jobs can make sense. We plan where cables run and leave new wiring to your electrician.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Is Bloomsbury in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes. Bloomsbury is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Bloomsbury?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. We’ll check the size at the design visit.

Can you add power points to the desk?

We do not do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.

What does a built-in desk cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

Doors and drawer fronts

Some home offices have doors that close over the whole desk. It suits a room that also has to work as a guest room or living room. The design visit is where we agree the doors.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The office furniture is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the rest of the room. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, so storage is lost at the top. Built-in pieces use the full height.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Home working in Bloomsbury: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Bloomsbury, with about 21% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 24 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Bloomsbury. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.9 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. For a family home near UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. Close to Lincoln's Inn Fields? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Bloomsbury is in the London Borough of Camden, about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras. Whether your home in Bloomsbury is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Camden, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Here we cover the NW1W, W1T and NW1 postcode area for fitted home offices. Whether you live on a street such as Drury Lane, Euston Road and Duke's Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for fitted home offices. Main roads around Bloomsbury include the A401 and A501, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Other places close to Bloomsbury include St Pancras (1 mile north-east), Euston (1 mile north-west), Kings Cross (1 mile north), Holborn (1 mile east) and Fitzrovia (1 mile west). Across the rest of Camden, our area takes in Hampstead (3 miles north-west), West Hampstead (3 miles north-west), Kentish Town (2 miles north-west), Greenhill (3 miles north-west), Chalk Farm (2 miles north-west) and Dartmouth Park (3 miles north).

Landmarks near Bloomsbury

In Bloomsbury, that includes homes near Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ, Queens Larder Public House and Pilsudski Institute of London and the streets around them. Nearby you’ll also find National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (under half a mile south-east) and Montfichet's Tower (1.2 miles south-east). Open spaces near Bloomsbury include Barnsbury Wood and St. James's Park Lake.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
