How we make loft storage for Waterloo
Our work is in loft rooms that are already converted, or lofts that are boarded. We do not carry out loft conversions, and Building Regulations apply to a conversion. Once the room is finished, we can design storage to suit it. In Waterloo, it all begins with a design visit. If your home has clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and low eaves that nobody can use, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so we cover them while we work. Around Waterloo, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and their plasterboard walls need fixings into the studs or made for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
- Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
- In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Preparing the room
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
Ask for a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Waterloo homes and loft storage
About 43% of the homes in the streets around Waterloo went up since 2000, and about 18% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Waterloo is partly covered by the Lower Marsh Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Lambeth is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Waterloo, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
If your children go to Oasis Academy Johanna or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Close to Jubilee Gardens? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses like Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.7 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.
Waterloo is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 2 miles south of Stockwell. Waterloo is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We list Waterloo among 22 places we cover in Lambeth.

Well-known places in the area include General Lying-In Hospital (under half a mile west) and Gabriel's Wharf (0.5 miles north). For a walk, there is St. James's Park Lake and Ludgate Hill.
Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Ready-made wardrobes and cupboards are built for standard rooms. In a loft room, standard pieces leave tricky gaps under the slope. Storage made for the loft follows its shape. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece cannot reach. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Waterloo?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It uses the full height of the room. We will work out the layout when we visit.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then brought to your home and fitted. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

What it costs
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How square the room is
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.
What to send when you contact us
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
For a quote for loft storage in Waterloo, use our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough measurements. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
