Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in Chelsea Harbour, we will look at what fits. Typical reasons to get in touch are ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs and a dormer that isn’t being used, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

With most households around Chelsea Harbour in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern developments are both possible. Older mansion block flats can have bays, long corridors and tall ceilings with space to use, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. In a maisonette, the space under the internal stairs is worth using.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What affects the price in Chelsea Harbour

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Why people ask for loft storage in Chelsea Harbour

Standard wardrobes don’t fit under a sloping ceiling. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It is a common need in a loft bedroom.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised

Near listed buildings like Old Battersea House, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Chelsea Harbour, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

What loft storage can’t fix

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Approval for structural changes
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Structural changes, like cutting into rafters or joists

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

How fitting works for loft storage

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the loft room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design and finish.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

Chelsea Harbour homes and loft storage

In the neighbourhood around Chelsea Harbour, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and the years since 2000 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 28 entries within half a mile of the centre of Chelsea Harbour. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. All of London, Hammersmith and Fulham included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Chelsea Harbour. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

Carlyle's House, about 0.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. For an older house near St Mary's Church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Chelsea Harbour is about 1 mile west of Fulham, part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Common questions about loft storage

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chelsea Harbour?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No. We do not carry out loft conversions. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

Do you work in Chelsea Harbour?

Yes. We cover Chelsea Harbour and the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
