Loft Storage in Fish Island

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Fish Island starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A dormer that is not being used
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • Boxes piled on loft boards

Loft storage in Fish Island

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Loft storage for homes in Fish Island

Our work is in loft rooms that are already converted, or lofts that are boarded. The conversion itself is not our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. Once the room is finished, we can design storage to suit it. If you have a converted loft in Fish Island, the design visit is the first step. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and a loft room with too many jobs.

A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, so there may be only one useful stretch of wall. With many homes around Fish Island built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Fish Island homes and loft storage

Homes built since 2000 make up about 49% of the housing in the streets around Fish Island, with about 22% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Fish Island include Church of St Mary of Eton (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west, and Lock Cottages (Grade II), under half a mile west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 71% of households in the area around Fish Island live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.3 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. Close to Grove Hall Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Fish Island is about 3 miles south-west of Whitechapel, part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. We design and make loft storage for homes in Fish Island. Our work takes in places right across Tower Hamlets, large and small.

We work across E3, E9 and E20. If your home is on a street like Wick Lane, Dace Road and Wyke Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for loft storage. If you are just outside Fish Island, we also cover Hackney Wick (1 mile north), Old Ford (1 mile south), Donnybrook Quarter (1 mile south-west), Bow (1 mile south) and East Village (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in Tower Hamlets, we also cover Whitechapel (3 miles south-west), Spitalfields (3 miles south-west), Tower Hill (3 miles south-west), Bethnal Green (2 miles south-west), Shadwell (2 miles south-west) and Stepney (2 miles south-west).

Common questions about loft storage

Is Fish Island in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, Fish Island is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Fish Island?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How much does loft storage cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It makes the most of the space. We plan it at the measuring visit.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Count the clothes you will need to hang
  • Think about how you’ll reach into the eaves
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Don’t pack things so tightly that air cannot move behind the knee wall. Leave the gaps we have designed in. It helps prevent damp behind the storage.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Insulation pressed flat doesn’t do its job. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Is it time for loft storage?

Some people want to make more of a dormer. Built-in furniture in a dormer puts it to work. It adds storage without crowding the room.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A dormer that isn’t being used
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished

For a family home near Mossbourne Riverside Academy, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How parking will work on your street

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf pieces come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the rest of the room. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves awkward gaps, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It works around service boxing too.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
