Telegraph Hill Loft Storage

Thinking about loft storage in Telegraph Hill? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.

  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • Unused space in a dormer
  • Boxes piled on loft boards

Loft storage designed for your room

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A standalone wardrobe can go with you when you move. Fitted storage stays put, and it makes far more of the loft. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Why us?

  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Saturday work by arrangement

Loft storage for homes in Telegraph Hill

Each eaves cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Telegraph Hill. People normally come to us about a new loft conversion that needs storage and wasted space behind the knee walls, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Telegraph Hill, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Making use of tricky spaces in Telegraph Hill

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the streets around Telegraph Hill, with about 16% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Telegraph Hill, Historic England’s list includes Southwark Adult Education Institute (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-west, and Chapel of Nunhead Cemetery (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Lewisham included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Telegraph Hill, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

Close to Fordham Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For families living near Haberdashers' Hatcham College, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Count the clothes you’ll need to hang
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Insulation pressed flat doesn’t do its job. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Why people ask for loft storage in Telegraph Hill

Boxes, suitcases and seasonal things need a home. Eaves cupboards keep them out of sight. The room stays calm and clear.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Unused space in a dormer
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

Queen's House, about 2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Honest limits

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Any work on the structure of the house
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts with some details from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Arranging a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Your questions about loft storage in Telegraph Hill

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Telegraph Hill?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Telegraph Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Telegraph Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
