Loft storage in South Acton

We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. The conversion itself is not our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. With the room in place, we can plan the storage. If you have a converted loft in South Acton, the design visit is the first step. People typically come to us about no wardrobe that fits under the slope and furniture that can’t get up to the loft, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Whether your home in South Acton is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there is often a corner or recess not doing much. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You let us know about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured, as everything has to get up there.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

How to prepare

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Do you need loft storage in South Acton?

Standard wardrobes do not fit under a sloping ceiling. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It’s often the main reason people get in touch about a loft bedroom.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes

Gunnersbury Park, about 0.3 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Loft storage in South Acton: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around South Acton were built before 1919 (about 41%) and since 2000 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of South Acton, Historic England’s list includes Gunnersbury House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and Archway at East End of Terrace (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Hounslow is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to South Acton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of All Saints, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Should you have a question about the storage, message us from the contact page and we’ll help.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Insulation pressed flat doesn’t do its job. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the storage. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. The colour is your choice.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the carcasses, the drawers and the shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Questions from South Acton

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in South Acton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in South Acton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

What affects the price in South Acton

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.
