Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Brixton station?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

How much time does fitting need?

Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Brixton

Many London homes have a small room that’s tricky as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. People typically come to us about proper shoe storage and a use for a small spare room; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Floors in older houses often slope, which matters around Brixton, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
  • Think about long versus double hanging

Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them to suit what you store. A seasonal tidy keeps it working well.

Plan any lighting with your electrician in good time. Wiring is their work, not ours, and it is easier to plan the units around it from the start.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A walk-in wardrobe gives everything room.

Here’s what walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Proper shoe storage
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • A use for a small spare room

For a family home near Sudbourne Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Walk-in wardrobes in Brixton: local notes

In the area around Brixton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 64 entries within half a mile of the centre of Brixton. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. About 50% of households in the streets around Brixton live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For an older house near Trinity Congregational Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a flat close to Brixton station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Getting in touch

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

How it’s made

Shelves

Shoe shelves can be angled or flat, sized to what you own.

Birch plywood

Drawers are opened every day, so we make them strong.

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build everything in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.

How to prepare

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Getting a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
