TV and media units for homes in Cubitt Town

We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We fit across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. If your home has set-top boxes stacked on a stand and a TV that looks out of place in the room, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Most internal walls in homes from recent decades are plasterboard on studs, and the board won’t carry a heavy load on its own. That matters around Cubitt Town, as many homes there date from 2000 onwards: heavier pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back into the studs.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Canary Wharf station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Cubitt Town?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Cubitt Town is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. We give each box its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

Cable routes are built into the design, with openings and access panels. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets, so it helps to plan sockets with your electrician.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan TV and media units. They help whatever the room:

  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Think about whether you will upgrade the screen

A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space, as they trap each other’s heat. Each one needs space around it.

Do you need TV and media units in Cubitt Town?

Some have tried off-the-shelf units that never quite fitted. Standard TV stands rarely suit an awkward wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • Speakers muffled behind doors

Living in a block of flats near Canary Wharf station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. TV and media units are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Built-in living-room furniture in Cubitt Town

Homes built since 2000 make up about 67% of the housing in the area around Cubitt Town, with about 17% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cubitt Town include Christ Church (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south, and Carnegie Library (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Newer homes are more common around Cubitt Town than across Tower Hamlets: about 67% date from 2000 onwards, against about 45%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.

Queen's House, about 1.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to Cubitt Town Infants' School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

How it is made

Birch plywood

A wide shelf under the TV needs stiffness. Birch plywood helps.
