TV and media units for your home in Isle of Dogs

About our TV and media units in Isle of Dogs

Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so equipment can’t simply be shut in a closed cupboard. We plan ventilation into the unit. It is worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about cables trailing across the wall and nowhere good for speakers.

Internal walls in newer homes are normally plasterboard on metal or timber studs, and the board will not carry a heavy load on its own. Around Isle of Dogs, where many homes were built since 2000, that shapes how TV and media units are fixed: tall units stand on the floor and are tied into the studs.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Questions from Isle of Dogs

Is Isle of Dogs in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, Isle of Dogs included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Greenwich station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket, with a route for the cables. The bracket needs a sound wall, which we look at during the design visit.

Do TV units need ventilation?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Each box should have its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.

How do I get started?

It’s easiest to use our contact form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

Cable routes are built into the design, with access panels for later changes. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.

Advice

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.

TV and media units in Isle of Dogs: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 52% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Isle of Dogs, with about 24% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Isle of Dogs is partly covered by the Chapel House Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 83% of households in the streets around Isle of Dogs live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Nicholas, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Mudchute Park and Farm, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 0.8 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What we don’t do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
