TV and media units for homes in Millwall

Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are clutter around the TV and wasted space around the screen.

Internal walls in newer homes are normally plasterboard on metal or timber studs, and the board will not carry a heavy load on its own. Around Millwall, where many homes were built since 2000, that shapes how TV and media units are fixed: tall units stand on the floor and are tied into the studs, and shelves use fixings made for the board where there is no stud.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Pricing TV and media units in Millwall

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Common questions about TV and media units

Does a conservation area in or near Millwall affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in Millwall. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

Your electrician does that. It is best done before the unit goes in, and we plan cut-outs and cable routes around the sockets.

Where a home in Millwall is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

Living in a block of flats near Deptford station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near Harbinger Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 0.9 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it’s useful to let us know during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves for heavy speakers and amplifiers.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated cabinets

Could you do it yourself?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
