London Fields Fitted Wardrobes
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in London Fields, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Not enough hanging space
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
Fitted wardrobes in London Fields
About our fitted wardrobes in London Fields
In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a compact bedroom, the wall above the door and over the bed is often unused. Since most households around London Fields live in purpose-built flats, bridging those spaces with fitted cupboards can add a lot of storage. Higher cupboards are best for things you use less often.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Fitted bedroom furniture in London Fields
In the area around London Fields, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Broadway Market Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of London Fields. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in London Fields. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Michael and All Angels, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like The New Lansdowne Club, under half a mile east of the centre of London Fields, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your children go to Gayhurst Community School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
London Fields is about 1 mile south-west of Shoreditch, within the London Borough of Hackney. Whether your home in London Fields is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our work takes in places right across Hackney.
In E8, E2 and E9, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Whether you live on a street such as Tudor Road, Forest Road and Duncan Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for fitted wardrobes. London Fields sits close to the A1207. We also cover Hackney Central (1 mile north), Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-east), Dalston (1 mile north-west), Hackney (1 mile north-east) and Kingsland (1 mile north-west). Other parts of Hackney we cover include Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Stamford Hill (2 miles north), Upper Clapton (2 miles north), Manor House (3 miles north-west), Lea Bridge (2 miles north-east) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles north-east).

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. If you are renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Built-in pieces are sized for each stretch of wall.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.
Why us?

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How it works.
What it’s made from
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.
- You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in London Fields
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in London Fields?
Yes, London Fields is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hackney and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in London Fields?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How we price fitted wardrobes
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The number of doors and drawers
- Parking near your home
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What to send when you contact us
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Any ideas or images you have saved
To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
