TV and Media Units in St Ann's
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make TV and media units for homes in St Ann's, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A TV that looks out of place in the room
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room

TV and media units in St Ann's
In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. Most enquiries start with somewhere to keep games tidy and nowhere good for speakers; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around St Ann's, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age usually have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
In older houses, we typically scribe the sides and top. It makes the unit look built in.
Birch plywood
Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.

How fitting day works
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- The unit is made at our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Starting with a design visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Common questions about TV and media units
I live in a flat in St Ann's. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in St Ann's?
Yes, St Ann's is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Haringey and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
What affects the price in St Ann's
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- The internal fittings
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The overall size of the piece
- The number of doors and drawers
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
What to send when you contact us
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
TV and media units in St Ann's: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 54% of the housing in the streets around St Ann's, with about 17% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of St Ann's, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 21% of households in the neighbourhood around St Ann's live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Ann, less than half a mile east of the centre of St Ann's, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 1.3 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For a flat near Seven Sisters station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bought units often have a single cable gap, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. A built-in unit has routes planned through it, with access panels for changes later. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
