TV and media units in Primrose Hill
Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you’re planning a TV unit in Primrose Hill, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. People typically come to us about boxes with no ventilation and a tangle of wires behind the TV, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
With most households around Primrose Hill in purpose-built flats, getting the furniture into the building matters as much as the design. Each piece is built in sections that fit the stairs, the lift and the doorways, then joined and scribed in the room. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

How fitting works for TV and media units
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
- We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We then make the unit in our workshop, with cable routes planned in.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place, with the cable routes left clear.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Before and after fitting day
Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Note the size of each box and speaker
Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line them up again.
Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and do not daisy-chain adaptors.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What TV and media units cannot fix
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
- Plastering or decorating around the unit
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast

Living-room carpentry in Primrose Hill: local notes
In the streets around Primrose Hill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 41%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 0.7 miles south. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For a flat near Kentish Town West station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Regent's Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

FAQs: TV and media units in Primrose Hill
I live in a flat in Primrose Hill. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Does a conservation area in or near Primrose Hill affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How long does it take to fit a TV unit?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
