TV and media units in Chalk Farm

Living-room carpentry in Chalk Farm: local notes

About 41% of the homes in the streets around Chalk Farm went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 129 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Chalk Farm. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. About 25% of households in the neighbourhood around Chalk Farm live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

For a flat near Kentish Town West station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 1.1 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If your children go to Haverstock School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

About our TV and media units in Chalk Farm

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and a big screen that dominates the wall.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Chalk Farm, from mansion blocks to modern developments. In a mansion block flat, the living room may still have a chimney breast and alcoves, and walls that are far from flat, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. TV and media units are designed for whichever you have.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the room and what the unit needs to hold, from set-top boxes to speakers.
  2. We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. Once you’re happy, the unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment, with the cable routes left clear.

Before we arrive

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. Standard furniture does not allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Fitted furniture is built around them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

Why choose us

  • We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote
  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • Work across the whole of London

Common questions about TV and media units

I live in a flat in Chalk Farm. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Chalk Farm?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar with open bays for bigger speakers. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Chalk Farm?

It’s easiest to fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
