TV and media units for homes in Belsize Park
In the area around Belsize Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Belsize Park is in the Belsize Park Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 54% of households in the neighbourhood around Belsize Park live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Belsize Fire Station, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near South Hampstead station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Church of St Mary the Virgin, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Belsize Park is part of the London Borough of Camden, about 2 miles south-east of St Pancras. We design and make TV and media units for homes in Belsize Park and across Camden. Belsize Park is one of the places in Camden where we make TV and media units, and the borough has 28 places on our list.

TV and media units in Belsize Park
Cables are the part most people want to hide. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about somewhere to keep games tidy and set-top boxes stacked on a stand.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Belsize Park, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Questions we’re often asked
My house in Belsize Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Does a conservation area in or near Belsize Park affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How do you hide the TV cables?
Cable routes are built into the design, with openings and access panels. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets, and your electrician can move them if needed.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?
We can size the opening for the screen you might buy next. It helps to know the size you’re thinking of.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
What it costs
There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The width and height of the space
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The internal fittings
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Getting in touch
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What the furniture needs to hold
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
How fitting works for TV and media units
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Let us know about parking near your home
How to get a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Advice
What we don’t do
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Structural changes to the wall
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
- Repairing plaster or redecorating
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
