Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Old Ford

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. If your home has somewhere for shoes to live and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a home built since 2000, stud walls may hide pipes and cables, so we check before fixing into them. Many homes around Old Ford date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What affects the price in Old Ford

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The internal fittings
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How many doors and drawers there are

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Where you live, with the postcode

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

If you’re likely to move soon, standalone furniture you can take with you may suit better. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing fitted. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It works around service boxing too.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Old Ford

In the area around Old Ford, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Old Ford, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Stratford Bow (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Phoenix School (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Old Ford is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live in a flat close to Hackney Wick station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Sutton House, about 1.5 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If your children go to Mulberry UTC or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Old Ford

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hackney Wick station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Old Ford?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.
