Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Shadwell

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Shadwell

Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, while open storage lets you see everything at once. We’ll talk through the options at the design visit. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are somewhere to sit and get ready and a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom.

When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. Since most households around Shadwell live in purpose-built flats, fitted furniture that bridges those spaces is worth considering. Higher cupboards are best for things you use less often.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the measuring visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and what you want to store.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Is bespoke worth it?

Fitted storage stays with the house when you move. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing fitted. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, which wastes the space above. Built-in pieces use the full height.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Shadwell

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Shadwell?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Is Shadwell in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. Shadwell is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. We allow for ventilation in the design.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Shadwell?

Others want a dressing table built in alongside the storage. We can design a dressing table into the room next to the hanging and shoe storage.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Somewhere for shoes to live

For a flat near Wapping station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What to check before you book

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bedroom storage in Shadwell

Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 35% of the housing in the area around Shadwell, with about 28% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 74 entries within half a mile of the centre of Shadwell. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. A van working in Shadwell will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

Mansion House, about 1.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If you live near Russia Dock Woodland, keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
