Walk-in wardrobes in Bow Common: what you get

Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors keep dust off and give a calm look, while open storage lets you see everything at once. We will go through the options during the design visit. Most enquiries start with the right mix of long and short hanging and moving wardrobes out of the bedroom, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many newer homes have tall windows or full-height glazing in the bedroom, so the remaining walls have to work harder. That’s worth planning for around Bow Common, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, and fitted furniture can use every part of the solid walls. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

What we don’t do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Building a new partition wall
  • Damp treatment or repairs

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Close to Bartlett Park? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Anne, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Stebon Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Count your shoes before the design visit
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly if it’s on an external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units to help air move.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so let us know what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build everything in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Arranging a design visit

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a dressing room need to stay straight, and birch plywood suits them.

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek finish, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Bow Common

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bow Common?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Do you fit lighting in walk-in wardrobes?

No. Lighting and wiring are jobs for your electrician. We design the units so the lighting can fit in, and agree the details at the design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Modular units are made in fixed sizes and rarely reach the ceiling. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, so very little space goes to waste. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
