Cambridge Heath Walk-in Wardrobes

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Cambridge Heath, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Cambridge Heath

Walk-in wardrobes in Cambridge Heath: what you get

A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, either open to the room or behind doors. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that is for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. If you’re living with a calmer, clearer bedroom and the right mix of long and short hanging, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Around Cambridge Heath, where many homes date from the post-war decades, the bedroom may be modest in size but regular in shape. Fitted furniture can make good use of every wall, planned around the space you need in front. Walls of that age can be harder to drill than plaster on brick, so the right fixings matter.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cambridge Heath?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Cambridge Heath?

Yes, Cambridge Heath is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes, if there is enough space. A section of the room can become a dressing area, with doors or left open. A new partition wall is building work, so that is for your builder.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Have a clear-out before we measure
  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting

Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change, so the space keeps working. A seasonal tidy keeps it working well.

Plan any lighting with your electrician in good time. New lights and wiring are for them, and the units can be designed around the lighting.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard systems come in set widths and heights, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, so very little space goes to waste. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Bedrooms in Cambridge Heath: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 32% of the housing in the area around Cambridge Heath, with about 23% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cambridge Heath include Church of St John on Bethnal Green (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Keeling House Bethnal Green (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Tower Hamlets included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Cambridge Heath, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to St James-the-Less, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. Sutton House, about 1 mile north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Haggerston Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.

  1. You let us know about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build everything in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Arranging a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
