How we make walk-in wardrobes for Tower Hamlets
Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors keep dust off and give a calm look, while open storage lets you see everything at once. We will discuss the options at the measuring visit. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about more space for clothes and shoes and moving wardrobes out of the bedroom.
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
- We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
- You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
- We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
What goes into your quote
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- Work across the whole of London
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- A design visit, then a written quote
- Saturdays by prior arrangement
Arranging a design visit
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes across Tower Hamlets
We make walk-in wardrobes for homes across Tower Hamlets, in Whitechapel, Spitalfields and Tower Hill and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.
About 45% of the homes in Tower Hamlets went up since 2000, and about 20% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 45% of homes in Tower Hamlets were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. Purpose-built flats are home to about 81% of households in Tower Hamlets, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so we look at both during the design visit.
Whitechapel: Close to Finsbury Circus? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. For a flat near Whitechapel station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Honest limits
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Getting consent under your lease
- Electrical work in the room
- Curing damp in the walls
Boards, parts and paint
Shelves
Shoe shelves can be angled or flat planned around your shoes.
Spray-painted finish
For a sleek finish, spray painting works well, and it’s done before fitting.
What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes
The price for your room depends on:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
What to send when you get in touch
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
What happens at the design visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?
Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not usually. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?
In many homes, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers and still leave room to move. We’ll measure and plan it at the design visit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
