Walk-in wardrobes in Coldharbour, Tower Hamlets

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Coldharbour starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • A side each for a couple
  • Somewhere for shoes to live

Fitted bedroom furniture in Coldharbour

In the area around Coldharbour, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 82%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Coldharbour include Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-west, and Isle House (Grade II), under half a mile north. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a family home near Woolmore Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live in a period home close to All Saints Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Coldharbour

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. Everything is made at our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about room for a growing wardrobe and proper shoe storage.

Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 sometimes have big windows that take up much of a wall, so the remaining walls have to work harder. That’s worth planning for around Coldharbour, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, and fitted furniture can use every part of the solid walls. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, in any colour you choose.

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a dressing room need to stay straight, and birch plywood suits them.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Advice

Questions from Coldharbour

Is parking a problem for fitting in Coldharbour?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

I live in a flat in Coldharbour. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

In many cases, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit, so we work it out when we measure.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Turning it into a dressing room can make better use of it than keeping a bed in it.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • A built-in dressing table
  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room

Queen's House, about 1.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
