Walk-in wardrobes in Covent Garden

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. Everything is made in our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. If you’re living with a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom and the right mix of long and short hanging, that’s what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Covent Garden built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Covent Garden

I live in a flat in Covent Garden. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

I live near London Charing Cross station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

How much time does fitting need?

It depends on the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and how you dress.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. You get a written quote for the design we’ve agreed.
  4. The units are made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Arranging a design visit

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Walk-in wardrobes in Covent Garden: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Covent Garden were built before 1919 (about 50%) and since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Covent Garden include Royal Opera House (Grade I), under half a mile north, and Church of St Paul Covent Garden (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, particularly for larger pieces.

Living in a block of flats near London Charing Cross station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Crown Court Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Sharing one wardrobe between two rarely works for long. We can design separate areas for hanging, shelves and drawers, so both have room.

Here’s what walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

If your children go to St Clement Danes CofE Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Modular units are made in fixed sizes, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, which can add a lot of storage. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
