What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Adelphi
Others want to clear the bedroom of wardrobes. Moving clothes into a separate space leaves the bedroom simpler and quieter to look at.
People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Turning a box room into a dressing room
- Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
- A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
- A calmer, clearer bedroom
For families living near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

About our walk-in wardrobes in Adelphi
A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about more space for clothes and shoes and shelves for shoes and bags.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Adelphi, and many blocks have rules about using the lift and when work can happen. Checking with the building’s managing agent early keeps the day running smoothly. If your flat is leasehold, your lease may also need checking before walk-in wardrobes are fixed to the walls.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What else we make in Adelphi
From workshop to your room
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.
- You let us know about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
- We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build everything in our workshop.
- We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We then check the doors and drawers with you.
How to prepare
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Ask for a quote
To make a start, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Advice
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Adelphi homes and walk-in wardrobes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 41% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Adelphi, with about 26% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 672 entries within half a mile of the centre of Adelphi. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, particularly for larger pieces.
Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For an older house near Savoy Chapel, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Adelphi
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Adelphi?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?
Yes, if there’s enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?
That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we go through the options when we measure.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
