How we make walk-in wardrobes for Westminster

Good light helps you see colours and find things. Wiring for new lights is a job for your electrician. We can plan the units so there’s space for the lighting you want, and agree the details at the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are proper shoe storage and a use for a small spare room, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through hanging, shoe storage and a dressing table, planned around the way you get dressed.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer.

What goes into your quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Homes across Westminster and their bedrooms

We make walk-in wardrobes for homes across Westminster, in City of Westminster, Marylebone and Soho and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

In Westminster, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 49% of homes in Westminster were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). A small spare room in an older house can make a good dressing room. Purpose-built flats are home to about 70% of households in Westminster, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

City of Westminster: Near listed buildings like Church of St Mark's, under half a mile south of the centre of City of Westminster, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Bond Street station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Westminster

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Standard systems come in set widths and heights, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, so very little space goes to waste.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Where other trades come in

Not everything around walk-in wardrobes is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Electrical work in the room
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Structural changes or removing walls

Questions we’re often asked

Do you fit lighting in walk-in wardrobes?

No. Lighting and wiring are jobs for your electrician. We plan the units with their work in mind, and agree the details during the design visit.

How long does fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

In many cases, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window. We plan it at the design visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
