About our walk-in wardrobes in Stepney
We fit walk-in wardrobes in Stepney and across London. We begin with a design visit, measuring the room and talking through the design, followed by a quote. Once agreed, we make the units in our workshop and fit them in your home. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you will know before we start. If you’re living with a use for a small spare room and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Post-war bedrooms tend to be simple rectangles, often with the window on the outside wall and the door near a corner. Many homes around Stepney date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, which often means a whole wall of fitted furniture with few tricky cuts. We plan the space in front first, so everything opens fully.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Bedroom storage in Stepney
In the streets around Stepney, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%) and the years since 2000 (about 30%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Stepney is within about a quarter of a mile of the Stepney Green Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. About 31% of homes in the neighbourhood around Stepney were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are usually simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.
If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. For a flat near Whitechapel station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Stepney Green Park, walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
Stepney is about 1 mile west of Whitechapel, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. From period terraces to newer flats in Stepney, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our Tower Hamlets coverage includes Stepney, along with the rest of the borough.
Every address in E1 and E2 is covered for walk-in wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. We cover homes on streets like Beaumont Square, Rectory Square and Carlton Square, whether you want walk-in wardrobes or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Stepney include the A11 and B120, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. If you’re just outside Stepney, we also cover East End of London (1 mile south-west), Ratcliff (1 mile south), Bethnal Green (1 mile north-west), Whitechapel (1 mile west) and Limehouse (1 mile east). Elsewhere in Tower Hamlets, we also cover Old Ford (2 miles north-east), Poplar (2 miles south-east), London Docklands (2 miles south-east), Canary Wharf (2 miles south-east), Isle of Dogs (3 miles south-east) and Leamouth (3 miles east).
Local landmarks in Stepney
Around Stepney, we cover homes near Stepney Green Mathematics and Computing College, Black Horse Public House and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives and the streets around them. There is a railway station in Stepney itself: Whitechapel station. Well-known places in the area include Tower of London (1.4 miles south-west) and The Royal London Hospital (under half a mile west). For a walk, there is Lavender Pond and Tower Hill.
What it costs
Several things affect the price:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The width and height of the space
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Getting in touch
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Any ideas or images you have saved
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Stepney
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Stepney?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
What happens on fitting day
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a post-war house, the hall and stairs are usually straight and simple, so carrying in is rarely difficult. Even so, the route is measured during the design visit. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place.

- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.

Getting ready for fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Getting a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page. The written quote follows the visit.

Before and after fitting day
People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:
- Count your shoes before the design visit
- Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
- Think about whether you want doors
- Have a clear-out before we measure
Keep heavy items low and lighter ones high, and do not overload a single rail. It helps the shelves and rails stay straight.
Talk to your electrician early about lighting. Wiring is their work, not ours, and the units can be designed around the lighting.
When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
