Walk-in Wardrobes in Hyde farm estate

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Hyde farm estate starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They help whatever the room:

  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Let air move through the space
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting

We adjust doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Good light helps you see colours and find things, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We can plan the units so there’s space for the lighting you want, and agree the details during the design visit. If your home has separate space for two people’s clothes and a calmer, clearer bedroom, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Hyde farm estate were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Turning it into a dressing room can make better use of it than keeping a bed in it.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • A side each for a couple
  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom

Near listed buildings like St Bede's Roman Catholic Primary School, less than half a mile east of the centre of Hyde farm estate, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Hyde farm estate

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Hyde farm estate, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. 19 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Hyde farm estate. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the neighbourhood around Hyde farm estate, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

If your children go to Telferscot Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Stephen's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Questions from Hyde farm estate

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Hyde farm estate?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Balham station?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes, if there is enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, with doors or left open. A new partition wall is building work, so that is for your builder.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

There is no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, giving a smooth finish.

Hanging rails

Long hanging is kept for coats and dresses, and the rest can be double hung.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
