Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. We check the wall and floor during the design visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. If you’re living with shelves or a desk around the bed and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, that’s what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Ruislip Gardens, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. That’s where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Wall beds in Ruislip Gardens: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Ruislip Gardens were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 53%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Ruislip Gardens. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 36% of households in the neighbourhood around Ruislip Gardens live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. London terraces usually have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, which suit fitted furniture.
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Paul, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If your children go to Ruislip High School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. The wider area includes historic houses like Ickenham Hall, about 1.3 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

What wall beds can’t fix
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Electrical work for reading lights
- Advice on your lease
- Strengthening or rebuilding a wall

What it is made from
- Spray-painted finish
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
- We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
- We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
Before fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What it costs
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- How square the room is
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The overall size of the piece
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
To make a start, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Common questions about wall beds
Can you make wall beds for a home in Ruislip Gardens?
Yes. Ruislip Gardens is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hillingdon and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
I live near South Ruislip station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Do you supply the mattress?
The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits at the measuring visit so you can choose one that works.
What space does a fold-down bed take up?
It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.
What does a wall bed cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form.
