Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Wall beds for homes in Knightsbridge

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, sitting quietly in the room. If your home has room for a desk and a guest bed and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep, that’s what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast normally sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Knightsbridge, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards, leaving the breast itself clear. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Practical tips

People planning wall beds often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Your questions about wall beds in Knightsbridge

Is parking a problem for fitting in Knightsbridge?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

My home in Knightsbridge is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Is a wall bed safe?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

It depends on the design. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

How are wall beds priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Bedrooms in Knightsbridge: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the area around Knightsbridge, with about 15% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 328 entries within half a mile of the centre of Knightsbridge. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Knightsbridge joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Near listed buildings like Apsley House, about 0.5 miles east of the centre of Knightsbridge, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your children go to Hellenic College of London or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live near Royal Parks of London, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Knightsbridge is about 1 mile north-east of City of Westminster, in the City of Westminster. Design visits and fitting in Knightsbridge can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. We cover places right across Westminster.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, and for occasional guests that may be enough. With a wall bed you get a proper bed and an empty floor by day, which matters in a small room. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, which suits the doors and side panels.

Bed mechanism housing

We build the housing to suit the mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. When the bed is up, the front looks like cupboard doors.
