Need fitted wardrobes in Knightsbridge?

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Knightsbridge

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Knightsbridge?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near London Victoria station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

It is worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

About our fitted wardrobes in Knightsbridge

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. Most enquiries start with condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Knightsbridge built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Bedroom storage in Knightsbridge

Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Knightsbridge, with about 15% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Knightsbridge, 17 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Around Knightsbridge, about 67% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Westminster as a whole, about 49%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of fitted wardrobes.

If your home is one of the older houses near Deutsche Evangelische Christuskirche, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your children go to Hellenic College of London or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line, with hanging where it is tall and drawers or shelves where it’s low. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Knightsbridge?

For some, it’s about a calmer room. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

Living in a block of flats near London Victoria station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How parking will work on your street

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
