Wall beds in St John's Wood
Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We will talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a home office that also sleeps guests and hiding the bed when it’s not in use.
When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. With most households around St John's Wood in purpose-built flats, bridging those spaces with fitted cupboards can add a lot of storage. Top cupboards suit things you need only now and then, like spare bedding or suitcases.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Your questions about wall beds in St John's Wood
I live in a flat in St John's Wood. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St John's Wood?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Is a wall bed safe?
Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.
How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?
That depends on the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.
Can a wall bed go on any wall?
That’s something we look at when we measure. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.
Is it time for wall beds?
Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A playroom that can sleep visitors
- A guest room that sits empty most of the time
- Hiding the bed when it is not in use
- A study that doubles as a spare room
If you live near Primrose Hill, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.
What to check before you book
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Where they’ll park and unload
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.
- You let us know about the room.
- We come to measure and talk through the bed, the storage and the finish.
- A written quote follows.
- The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
