Wall beds in Little Venice: what you get
We fit wall beds in Little Venice and across London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, then a quote in writing. The cabinets are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know beforehand. People typically come to us about a hobby room with a bed for guests and a living room with a bed that folds away, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Little Venice date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Bedroom storage in Little Venice
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Little Venice were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 12 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Little Venice. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. More than a third of the homes in the area around Little Venice (about 47%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Older houses can have lath-and-plaster internal walls and floors that slope, both of which matter when fixing a wall bed.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Catholic Apostolic Church and Church House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Kensington Gardens? Wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Looking after your furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Measure the clear space in front of the wall
- Consider how many people will sleep in it
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Choose a mattress that suits the mechanism
Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, and do not let children play with it.
Think about the route into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so tell us about narrow stairs or a small lift.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

What happens on fitting day
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
Getting ready for fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Advice
Your questions about wall beds in Little Venice
My home in Little Venice is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Little Venice?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?
The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this at the design visit, so the design works.
What materials do you use?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
Do you need wall beds in Little Venice?
In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. A bed that folds up gives you a living room in the day and a bedroom at night.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A flexible room for a growing family
- A bed that fills a little-used room
- Storage built around a fold-down bed
- A living room with a bed that folds away
Winfield House, about 1 mile north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
Is bespoke worth it?
If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. How long you will be in the home is worth weighing up before choosing built-in. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
