Wall beds designed for your room

Is bespoke worth it?

A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

About our wall beds in Westbourne Green

Our wall beds are made for homes in Westbourne Green and all over London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, then a quote in writing. The cabinets are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know in advance. If your home has a study that doubles as a spare room and a bed that fills a little-used room, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Westbourne Green built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Wall beds in Westbourne Green: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Westbourne Green, with about 12% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Westbourne Green, 15 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Around Westbourne Green, about 67% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Westminster as a whole, about 49%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

Living in a block of flats near London Paddington station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. Kensington Palace, about 1 mile south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Westbourne Green is about 2 miles east of City of Westminster, part of the City of Westminster. We can visit homes in Westbourne Green on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Westminster.

Every address in W2, W9 and W11 is covered for wall beds. If your home is on a street such as Salem Road, Talbot Road and Harrow Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for wall beds. The A404 and A4206 run close to Westbourne Green; on busy main roads, unloading wall beds takes a little planning. Other parts of Westminster we cover include City of Westminster (2 miles east), Marylebone (2 miles east), Soho (3 miles east), Chinatown (3 miles east), St James's (3 miles east) and Covent Garden (3 miles east).

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Questions from Westbourne Green

I live in a flat in Westbourne Green. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near London Paddington station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. A spray finish wipes clean and stays smooth and even.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. It shapes the bed size and the type of mechanism as well as the storage around it.

The problems wall beds solve

Some want a room that can change as the family does. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests when it’s needed.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A real mattress for visitors
  • A studio that works by day and night

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary Magdalene, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will the quote be in writing?
