Wall beds for homes in Perry Vale
Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day, ready for work, exercise or play. When guests come, the bed folds down. If your home has a bed that fills a little-used room and a studio that works by day and night, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, bedrooms can be anything from a box room to a big front room. Wall beds can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Every wall in Perry Vale homes is measured on site, because none is assumed to be square.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
Common questions about wall beds
Can you make wall beds for a home in Perry Vale?
Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Perry Vale is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Perry Vale?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Do you supply the mattress?
The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
- At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and discuss the design. We also check there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You get a written quote for the bed cabinet and any storage around it, for you to look over.
- We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
How to prepare
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Caring for painted furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
- Consider how many people will sleep in it
- Choose a mattress that suits the mechanism
- Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched up. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.
If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the design visit too.
When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
- Structural work to the wall or floor
- Advice on your lease
Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

If your children go to Perrymount Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
