Wall beds in Perivale
Wall beds for homes in Perivale
Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. People normally come to us about a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a home office that also sleeps guests; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. Around Perivale, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Caring for painted furniture
People planning wall beds often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
- Lower and lift the bed steadily
- Think about where extra bedding will go
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. The mechanism should only be adjusted as its maker allows.
Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we look at it when we measure.
How fitting works for wall beds
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- First, you let us know about the space.
- We visit, measure and discuss the bed, shelves and desk.
- A quote in writing is sent to you.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the bed and storage in your home.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Ask for a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

- Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
- Plastering or decorating the room
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it is made from
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Shelves or a desk alongside
Perivale homes and wall beds
About 77% of the homes in the area around Perivale went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 11% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Perivale include Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Perivale Underground Station (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Ealing are set locally. If your road in Perivale falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Pitzhanger Manor, about 2 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For families living near St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For a flat near South Greenford station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Perivale is about 2 miles south of Ealing, in the London Borough of Ealing. Design visits and fitting in Perivale can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. In Ealing, Perivale is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 19 places on our list.
Design visits and fitting in UB6, HA0 and W5 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Neighbouring places we cover for wall beds include Pitshanger (1 mile south), Brentham Garden Suburb (1 mile south-east), Sudbury Hill (1 mile north), Sudbury (1 mile north) and Greenford (1 mile west). Across the rest of Ealing, our area takes in Ealing (2 miles south), Acton (3 miles south-east), Southall (3 miles south-west), Northolt (2 miles west), Acton Green (4 miles south-east) and Bedford Park (4 miles south-east).
Near you in Perivale
Around Perivale, we cover homes near St Benedict's School, Brentham Clubhouse pub and Alperton Community School and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is South Greenford station, roughly 0.8 miles south-west of the centre. A little further out are Clementine Churchill Hospital (1.9 miles north) and London Designer Outlet (1.9 miles north-east). Not far away are Castlebar Hill and Perivale Wood.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Your questions about wall beds in Perivale
I live near South Greenford station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Perivale?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
Are fold-down beds safe to use?
Wall beds are made for regular use as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What does a wall bed cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
