How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so let us know about bays, permits or any loading area at the design visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

About our fitted wardrobes in Oval

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about damp or musty clothes against an external wall and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.

Bedrooms in flats often share a wall with the next flat or the communal corridor, and that wall could be solid or plasterboard. Around Oval, where most households live in purpose-built flats, fixings are chosen with neighbours in mind as well as strength. Tall pieces are always fixed back.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Oval

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Oval were built since 2000 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 131 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Oval. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 69% of households around Oval live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Lambeth as a whole, about 52%, based on Census 2021. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

Buckingham Palace, about 1.7 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a flat near Vauxhall station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Oval is in the London Borough of Lambeth, about 1 mile south of Stockwell. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Oval and across Lambeth, as part of our work in every London borough. Oval is one of the places in Lambeth where we make fitted wardrobes.

We work across the SW8, SW9 and SW1P postcode area for fitted wardrobes. Streets in the area include Lett Road, Rita Road and Wyvil Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted wardrobes. The A203 and A3204 runs close to Oval, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted wardrobes include Kennington (1 mile north), South Lambeth (1 mile south-west), Little Portugal (1 mile south), North Brixton (1 mile south-east) and Vauxhall (1 mile north). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places like Streatham (4 miles south), West Norwood (4 miles south), South Bank (2 miles north), Brixton (2 miles south), Gipsy Hill (4 miles south) and Streatham Hill (3 miles south).

Questions we are often asked

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Oval?

Yes. Oval is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Oval?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We’ll look at the room with you during the design visit.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

The usual reason is simple: there is not enough storage. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

For a family home near St Stephen's Church of England Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • How parking will work on your street

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust any door that starts to catch.
